Introduction

Welcome to my blog! I’ll be using this blog to present my thoughts, opinions and responses to questions while I run for Vice president of Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) in the elections that will open early in 2014. I’m hoping to touch on a variety of election, engineering and philosophical topics that arise in the coming weeks and months. I'd love to hear from you about your thoughts and questions about the engineering profession, particularly in Ontario.

Who am I? I'm currently the elected Northern Regional Councillor and the Vice President (Appointed) on PEO Council. I was first elected in the 2012 elections and am coming to the end of my first term on council. My undergrad degree is in chemical engineering and I have a Master’s in food engineering and a PhD in land resource science. I currently work for the Ontario Public Service as a supervisor of a team of compliance officers. During my 25 plus year career, I have held a variety of engineering, research, policy and technical positions in academics, consulting and government.

Co-Chair Getting a Seat and Having a Voice:The Importance of Women Engineers at the Boardroom Table

I cochaired the 2015 WEAC Fall Forum which featured an illustrious panel of speakers including two 2015 winners of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women. Did you know that Ontario’s “Comply or Explain” policy regarding gender diversity on boards was developed and implemented by women – Clare Beckton, P.Eng., Deputy Head for Status of Women Canada from 2007 to 2009 and Maureen Jensen, then Executive Director and now CEO, of the Ontario Securities Commission? Both women spoke at the forum and it was amazing to hear them discuss their journey from identifying the problem of the lack of women on boards, through to determining a solution, implementing it into legislation and now tracking the results. One year after “Comply and Explain” was implemented, the percentage of companies with at least one female on their board increased from 42 per cent in 2013 to 49 per cent, according to a review by Canadian Securities Administrators, as reported by CBC News.

Making the Sudbury News!

I believe it's a good thing to share our election with the public. I suspect, however, that I'm the only candidate up for election for PEO Council that has managed to get the election into the newspapers! This is the 3rd reference to the election I've managed. Here's the latest in the printed version of the Northern Life ... I supplied the text... I have to think that they found it so unbelievable that only two women were running for council positions that they changed it to two women running for VP! Nickel Belt MPP France Gelinas Attends Sudbury Chapter AGM

The PEO Sudbury Chapter held its AGM on Feburay 12th at Cambrian College's "Au pied du rocher" restaurant. We had our best turnout in years at this fabulous inspiring location! Nickel Belt MPP France Gelinas spoke about government and Stephan Matusch, President of Ionic Engineering spoke about the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship.
